Every April, IBS Awareness Month helps bring attention to one of the most common digestive concerns people experience. Irritable bowel syndrome, often called IBS, can affect daily life in a very real way, especially when symptoms feel unpredictable.
At NATPATH, many clients contact us asking whether colon hydrotherapy may be suitable if they have IBS-type symptoms. The answer is that many of the people we see come to us with concerns such as bloating, gas, constipation, irregular bowel movements, abdominal discomfort or a feeling of heaviness.
IBS can be frustrating because it is often used as an umbrella term for a collection of digestive symptoms. Many people have already spoken to their GP, had checks carried out, and been told that nothing more specific has been found. Yet the bloating, gas, discomfort or bowel changes are still there.
There are also different types of IBS. IBS-C is constipation-predominant, and this is something we commonly see in the clinic. IBS-D is diarrhoea-predominant, which we also support, and IBS-M involves mixed bowel patterns, where symptoms may alternate between constipation and diarrhoea.
There can be many contributing factors. Food intolerances, stress, poor sleep, sedentary habits, processed foods, alcohol, low fibre intake, poor digestion and changes in routine can all play a role. For some people, symptoms are occasional. For others, they can affect confidence, clothing choices, social plans and how comfortable they feel in their body.
Colon hydrotherapy is often associated with constipation, but in clinic we also see clients seeking support for bloating, excess gas and irregular bowel habits. A colonic may help stimulate the natural movement of the bowel, support peristalsis and help release accumulated waste and gas. Many clients report feeling lighter, less bloated and more comfortable afterwards.
Of course, IBS support is not only about the colon. The upper digestive tract, food choices, hydration, stress and nervous system balance all matter too. That is why we often combine colon hydrotherapy with naturopathic nutrition, food intolerance testing, abdominal massage, fibre guidance and practical lifestyle support.
During IBS Awareness Month, our focus is education as well as support. We will be sharing more information, recipes, tips and digestive health ideas on Instagram to help clients better understand their gut and the different options available.
If you experience IBS-type symptoms such as bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhoea or irregular bowel habits, take a look at our services or get in touch if you have any questions. Colon hydrotherapy may be a helpful place to start as part of a wider digestive health routine.
