GLP-1 Weight Loss Injections, Bloating and Constipation: A Naturopathic View

Over the last couple of years, we have noticed a significant rise in clients using GLP-1 weight loss injections. These include semaglutide and tirzepatide, often known by brand names such as Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro.

Weight loss remains one of the biggest challenges many people face. It can affect confidence, self-esteem, emotional wellbeing and how people feel in their body. It is also rarely simple. Hormonal changes, menopause, PCOS, emotional eating, alcohol intake, stress, poor sleep, sedentary habits and long-standing lifestyle patterns can all play a part.

For many people, GLP-1 injections feel like a possible solution. They may help reduce appetite, support fullness and influence blood sugar regulation. At NATPATH, we work without judgement. Every weight loss journey is personal, and our focus is on supporting the body through that journey as well as possible.

One of the most common concerns we see in the clinic is digestive discomfort. Clients often describe bloating, gas, nausea, heaviness after eating, constipation, low energy and feeling sluggish. This can happen because GLP-1 medications are known to slow gastric emptying, which means food may leave the stomach more slowly and move through the digestive system at a slower pace.

When appetite is reduced, people may also drink less water and eat less fibre. This can make bowel movements less regular and contribute to that heavy, backed-up feeling.

This is where colon hydrotherapy can be helpful as part of a digestive health routine. A colonic may support the natural movement of the bowel, encourage peristalsis and help clear accumulated waste and gas. Many clients report feeling lighter, less bloated and more comfortable afterwards. During a GLP-1 journey, some clients choose one or two sessions, while others prefer a short course or monthly support.

Nutrition is just as important. Even with a smaller appetite, the body still needs protein, fibre, hydration and nutrients. A naturopathic nutrition consultation can help you create a realistic eating plan that feels manageable while taking GLP-1 medication. Fibre-rich foods may include kiwi, apples, pears, berries, oats, chia seed pudding, ground flaxseed, vegetables and pulses. Protein options may include eggs, chicken, fish, tofu, tempeh, lentils and beans. Supplements may also be recommended where appropriate.

If colon hydrotherapy is not suitable or preferred, abdominal massage can be a gentler option to support relaxation, digestive flow and abdominal comfort. Lymphatic drainage massage may also be considered where clients feel sluggish, heavy or fluid-retentive.

At NATPATH, we support clients using GLP-1 medications with practical, personalised care, including colon hydrotherapy, abdominal massage, lymphatic drainage, naturopathic nutrition and fibre guidance.
